Keeping Your YouTube Reporting & Measurement Consistent

YouTube updated the way it counts views on August 24, 2026, and the impact is significant.

YouTube’s new view now counts from the moment a video begins playing, starting with the very first frame. Since the update, we and others have seen view counts rise, to around double for some videos.

Similar to the legacy view metric though, YouTube reports engaged views. An engaged view is defined as watching past the initial first frame or clicking to watch. However, this non-public metric is only available to creators through their YouTube Analytics dashboard.

For Podscribe buyers, the doubling of the public YouTube view metric (with no matching consumption change) creates several issues, specifically the inflation of:

  1. Simulcast modeled results

  2. Billing for YouTube views

  3. Rank of simulcast channels in our industry rankers

  4. Campaign delivery

Engaged views however, by staying aligned with the legacy view, avoid all of the above.
However, since engaged views are not public, a steep manual reporting burden arises for publishers.

"Beyond just ‘not losing’ the old view, YouTube’s view definition change creates an opportunity for us to actually improve transparency and reporting in podcasting."

Automating Engaged Views Reporting

Engaged views are now available within creator-only YouTube Analytics. But advertisers shouldn’t have to rely on screenshots, or spreadsheets, and publishers shouldn’t need to waste time creating them.

So, Podscribe can now directly & automatically report engaged views on campaigns (for opted-in publishers), beginning on Monday, September 21.

For advertisers and agencies, it means seamless reporting of YouTube metrics within one unified measurement platform.

For publishers, it means no manual reporting and a better way to demonstrate YouTube performance to advertisers. Publishers can see engaged views on their ‘Audience Size’ tab within the Podscribe dashboard starting next week.

To make clear which shows support this auto-reporting, we’ll indicate them within our research platform.

The Podscribe Ranker will highlight publishers who have opted in, while relying on engaged views to sort shows and publishers, estimating them where not yet available. This keeps rankings fair while giving opted-in publishers credit for the added transparency.

Podscribe Will Use Engaged Views for YouTube Modeling and Billing

To avoid a doubling of simulcast modeled conversions, Podscribe will model simulcast YouTube performance from engaged views. Podscribe will also retain engaged views as the billable metric as well, to avoid any disruption in pricing.

When a publisher has not yet authorized engaged views reporting, Podscribe will estimate them from the new views metric, based on data we see across all channels.

Additionally, we will be sharing more details in an upcoming announcement with more info for how YouTube conversion modeling is improved for channels that integrate their analytics.
